Practically impossible to tell that this was previously used as came in great condition with prompt delivery. Whoever read this before me clearly goes easier on the spine of the book they're reading that I do...Still brushing up on my Italian so the text is slow going but if you love crime writing and the Sicilian sun, then I would recommend this to anyone whose Italian is intermediate or above.

Don't let Camilleri's reputation for writing 50% of the time in Sicilian put you off. This book is highly readable, entertaining and well paced.Characterisation is superb and there is a good dash of humour. I am by no means proficient in Italian but I read all the way through with great pleasure.

A welcome first read after having enjoyed the TV series

I chanced upon the TV series on BBC and, being Italian, really enjoyed the language, casting, and plots. Having finally read the first novel, I assume the choice of "lightness" was necessary for a wider appeal where the novel is much darker, more disturbing in its depiction of Sicily. Sadly, a reality which not only permeates the novel but which many Sicilians face daily and can hardly escape.Very readable (but the Sicilian dialect is a real challenge!) and Montalbano is an aspirational character who navigates brutality with poise and humour...and an admirable appreciation for good food!I will continue onto the next in the series for sure and I'm glad there are so many to go through...
