"The theory is systematically developed by the axiomatic method that has, since von Neumann, dominated the general approach to linear functional analysis and that achieves here a high degree of lucidity and clarity. The presentation is never awkward or dry, as it sometimes is in other "modern" textbooks; it is as unconventional as one has come to expect from the author. The book contains about 350 well placed and instructive problems, which cover a considerable part of the subject. All in all this is an excellent work, of equally high value for both student and teacher." Zentralblatt für Mathematik

I bought this book about 40 years ago but as usual could not find it amongst all my other books when I wanted to refer to it so I bought this copy!! What more can I say about this book that hasn't already been said by others much more qualified than me (a holder of a mere masters in mathematical physics)? Well, one thing. This, and Halmos' other books, give me a feeling of soundness and confidence in what I'm reading - don't ask me why, I don't know but they are written in such a way that at least I get this feeling of reliabilityOh yes - and the copy I've just bought from you was of the good quality I expected and was reasonably pricedKeep up the good work

By D. Richerby
The text is excellent and there are many, many reviews testifying to that. It's beautifully clear and even quite witty in places. Vector spaces are treated abstractly, as far as possible avoiding co-ordinate systems. Despite being written in 1958, the style in many places is rather algorithmic: for example, the proof that two bases of the same space must have the same number of elements proceeds by moving elements across one at a time, each time recomputing (although Halmos doesn't use that word) a minimal set that spans the space. However, this edition (from LiteraryLicensing.com) is a fairly low-quality facsimile, with blocky, uneven lettering. For those of you who remember such things, it looks almost like it was produced with a high-quality dot-matrix printer: the text is perfectly legible but the type isn't very pleasant to read. There are some artifacts: at the top of page 20, the boldface section title has become a hollow blackboard bold, a random word has acquired an underline and the ascenders and descenders of all the letters on the third line have been lost (thankfully, that line is entirely running English text so it's easy to see what it's supposed to say). The binding is also very rigid which, combined with the very small margins, means you need to put actual effort into holding the book open wide enough to read. Finally, the book doesn't say anywhere that it's printed on acid-free paper. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Who knows what it will look like in ten years' time.
