Another great read here from brandreth again. I look forward to reading his third book in the series. Would highly recommend. Great knowledge of Wilde mixed with a great mystery story.

5GLORIOUSLY ENTERTAINING FOR THOSE IN THE MOOD
By Mr. D. L. Rees
Whom would you like to kill? Name on paper, please, these to be drawn out of a bag - the aim of those assembled to identify the writer. This seems harmless fun for the fourteen present at the Socrates Club Wilde founded - until, within hours, the deaths begin, each in the same order as announced. Wilde must get busy, for he is on the list....Second in the series of six, this probably even better than the first: events are more concentrated, there a greater sense of urgency. As before, the exploits of Sherlock Holmes in stories now the rage, have fired Wilde's imagination - he resorting to similar tactics (minus those that require physical exertion).Another great read - enhanced by all the details Brandreth provides about people, places, way of life in 1892. (Some asides chill - one grim spot visited with even more rats than the kitchen at the Savoy.)This is a good murder mystery too, its skilfully constructed climax having survivors assembled to learn from Wilde exactly who did what. Well done, those who deduced correctly!Perhaps, though, there is an in-built problem. Many real life characters are around (Conan Doyle, Bram Stoker, Walter Sickert, Lord Alfred Douglas included). Presumably these cannot be culprits, the suspects(s) thus confined to the few others. This considerably narrows the field, especially when there were only fourteen to choose from in the first place.A very great asset is the device of having friend Robert Sherard narrate in 1939, memory refreshed by detailed diaries he kept. Gifted by hindsight, he can put everything in perspective - those hints Wilde's days of glory are nearing their end adding an ominous new dimension. Also appealing are nuggets of information, some so scandalous they surely cannot be true. (Brandreth assures us they are. In fact there were many he dare not include.) One thing for sure: "Victorian Respectability" is but a myth for those in the know.Amongst interesting revelations is the female campaign for more user-friendly fashions - no more corsets so restricting, billowing gowns such a fire risk.Read virtually in one go and thoroughly enjoyed.

3The Ballad of Reading Gyles
By Sam Tyler
Oscar Wilde was very much a real person, but in Gyles Brandreth's series of detective novels he appears in fictional crime cases that contain some real people. In `Oscar Wilde and the Ring of Death', Oscar finds himself investigating a series of murders that are all linked to a parlour game that he instigated. The cast includes, of course, Wilde, but also the likes of Bram Stoker and Arthur Conan Doyle. The influence of Conan Doyle is as pronounced as that of Wilde himself as the books read like Holmes novels with added wit. Wilde is able to use his keen intelligence and eye for detail to pick up on clues that most people would not see.The book proved to be a pleasant read and Brandreth does seem very capable of capturing the late Victorian period and Wilde's role in it. However, the author almost appears to be having too much fun with the setting and characters, to the detriment of the actual mystery. The suspense of the book drops in and out as if Brandreth is only interested in crime when it suits him. This gives the book a slightly disjointed feel as it heads off on tangents on more than one occasion. The book is a decent enough read, but does not have the core story to really capture a crime fan's attention.
